A jar of tar and walks to the station

Dear Susan,

There are people who are born with a gift: it doesn’t matter how much or how little time they spend with us, how often we have a conversation with them, or whether we’ve know them from work or socially. These people leave their mark in our hearts through their kindness and joy for life, and you were definitely born with that gift...

Though I am still in shock, today, and every day, I choose to remember you by that special kindness and joy, and optimism that always shone through you.
You were not in the office every day, but when you were, you always had a nice word and a warm smile for everyone. Nothing was too much trouble, and you always took any issues or problems in your stride. I don’t think I have ever heard you complaining about anything.

You were so incredibly passionate and enthusiastic about your work. I will always smile when thinking about the mountain of leaflets and other “quit smoking” materials on your desk at work, where that scary jar full of a dark liquid made of tar and cigarettes butts took pride of place. I do wonder how many lives you have saved over the years, with your work (and that disgusting-looking jar!!).

I will also always remember the kindness you’ve shown me since my very first days in the Southwark Public Health team. I had just joined the team, and everything was new and scary, I didn’t know anyone at all. I remember one day the whole team had to go to an Away Day out of the office, and as we were walking towards the station, I was trailing behind everyone else and walking on my own.
You saw me, and purposely slowed down so that I could catch up with you, and then struck a conversation with me to put me at ease. I don’t think I even realised that at the time, so forgive me for not saying “thank you” then and there. I am saying it now.

Susan, you have touched the lives of so many people, and have truly left your mark in this world, which is an amazing thing.

I will never forget you and I am so grateful I met you. I will try and get inspired by your joy and happiness, and, above all, by your kindness. I miss you, but I am sure we will meet again, some day.

With all my love,

Clizia
