I met Susan at my first London Tobacco Control meeting in the autumn of 2014. I was a complete novice, having recently joined Hackney Council's Public Health team, with no previous experience of working either in the NHS or in a local authority. Susan was incredibly warm and welcoming, showing me the ropes and offering advice whenever I asked for it. A few years later, together with Wendy (Greenwich Council), Doug (Islington), LeAnne (Hounslow) and Dave (Camden) we launched the Stamp it Out illegal tobacco campaign across London. Susan was a tireless campaigner and always saw the bigger picture, working in her own time to ensure the campaign was a success. She never complained and always offered to do the hardest part of the campaign - writing up the report afterwards. She took her work seriously but with a smile and a twinkle in her eye, combining a strong work ethic with a great sense of humour. Even though we were professional colleagues, Susan was more like a friend. We were last in touch in the summer of 2020, as we compared notes of what we going to do next. Her family were clearly so important to her and so my thoughts are with them during this very sad time. Miranda Eeles (Hackney Public Health, 2014 - 2020)
